Just write…

For one reason and another, I have been posting less frequently than I used to and it’s made me realise…

The less frequently I write, the more difficult it is to get going again.

So, I’m wondering…

Is writing something that happens in period 3 on Tuesdays?

or

Are your learners constantly picking up a pen (iPad) to write their reflections, thoughts and ideas?

and

Is writing a task that you set?

or

Do your students have time to write (something!) every single day?

and

Do you write?

or

Do you wonder if  your writing is ‘good enough’?

Just write…

  1. Hi Edna, True, the daily routine of writing makes it such a natural process. When you write daily you have to accept the fact that some posts will be better than others. Thanks for the inspiration.

    1. Exactly, Maureen! I used to write for myself, so it didn’t matter. Lately I have been feeling that I need to meet the expectations of my readers. I need to go back to writing for myself. I accept that some posts will be better than others… my readers will have to too 🙂

    1. You CAN write, Jeremy…. or do you mean you wish you had time/motivation. I can give you a deadline! Write me a post about your new job. I’ll expect it by Friday. Tweet me when it’s done 🙂

  2. Just finished a chapter for a book I have been postponing until the due date at midnight tonight.. maybe as writers we need due dates lol. Love this post! I too have let my own blog go dormant these past few weeks, time to get back at it. Thanks!

  3. Thanks, Edna, for the reminder to “Just Write”. The feedback that I’ve been getting from my blog post ties in really well with your comments. I’m motivated now to keep the drafts flowing and the posting ongoing! Thanks for the motivation! 🙂

  4. I want to blog 4 times a month, but I usually get just 2 in. Last night, literally at 11:59pm I hit ‘publish’ to get my second post in for May!
Beyond that, I love your message about getting students to write… EVERY … DAY!
Not much else to say, except ‘thanks for a great post’, but couldn’t let this one go past me without writing a comment! 🙂

  5. I set up a schedule of posting to my blog every Monday and Thursday. Typically, I write the posts on Sunday afternoons and Wednesday evenings, but that fell apart in May thanks to family drama and the need to let something go–unfortunately my writing is the first thing I cut when things get crazy. I’m trying to jump back on the train now. I’d like to have my students do more reflective writing next year. Maybe I can use some of that time to do more writing myself?

  6. I think of this with both students and myself quite frequently: in weeks when I don’t find time to read or write, when is it students would have time to do the same? As much as our curriculum stresses writing, I found it hard to fit informal writing time in for students during the last months of the year, and my own writing was not happening in those same months, either. End of the school year meant we had lots of interruptions for special events. I can handle it if the lack of time was a temporary phase, but it’s on my list of things to think about in preparing for next year — how I will keep my writing going during the school year, and how to make time in my students’ schedule to reach all the activities I’d like them to do. Thanks for the great post!
